General Information

Eclectus Parrots have to be one of the most beautiful parrot species existing.  The reason that these guys are so unique is because the males and females have totally different colors.  Seen in the pictures below, the males are primarily green, and the females are blue and red.  Eclectus Parrots are all around great parrots.  They are great talkers and are willing to learn words and phrases if you teach them, they are very affectionate, and they aren't too loud.  Eclectus parrots can live anywhere from 50 to 70 years.  They will grow to be about 14 inches long.  These birds are mainly found in parts of Australia and New Guinea.

Behavior and Personality

Eclectus Parrots should always be brought home just after it was weaned.  This gives the most time for the bird to become attached to you, and for it to adjust to it's surroundings, whereas a cockatoo or a smaller bird wouldn't mind being brought home later in it's life because of it's temperment.  They make great pets but they do have a strong bite, and won't think twice when intimidated or frightened.  To have an Eclectus as a pet, like other parrots, it needs to be constantly handled and treated like a member of the family.  Eclectus parrots are one of the most social birds, and need attention.  People say that the females aren't as nice as the males are, but like all rumors go, that isn't always true.  This is said because in the pair, the female is the more dominant one who makes all of the decisions.  Once an Eclectus gets to know you and love you, whether male or female in this case, it will always treat you with a lot of affection and love.  Although they take a bit to get accustomed to, they are one of my favorite parrots as pets!

Interesting Information

Eclectus Parrots are very unique in their own way starting from the sexual dimorphism of colors in the birds.  The male is a mostly green bird with red and blue under his wings with an orange or yellow beak.  The female is a reddish color, and a blue-purple color with a black beak.  There are 10 different kinds of Eclectus parrots, the most well'known or most poular being the Solomon Island Eclectus.  The Solomon Islands are islands to the right of Austrailia and New Guinea where the other kinds of Eclectus parrots are found.  Their diet consists of most fruits and vegetables you can name, and plenty of seeds and grains found in the rainforest.  Another interesting fact about the Eclectus is that the Eclectus has more of a fur or hairlike coat versus the average feathers.  They are feathers, but they are missing the interlocking barbules on them which makes them feel and appear different that other bird's feathers.  Eclectus parrots stress out very easily and this can lead to nasty behavior, plucking of feathers, and loud squaking.  With all of this awesome information you can really understand what it's like to have an Eclectus parrot!
