General Information

These birds are of the smartest in the world and have been known to say up to 1000 words!  Obviously, African Greys are grey in color, but they also have a hint of red at the tip of their tail.  They range in a size of 13-16 inches, or 33 to 41 centimeters.  They are found in Central and Western Africa, in lowlands, rainforests, and some villages.  The two known kinds of African Greys are Congos and Timnehs.  These birds can live anywhere from 50 to 65 years old.

  Talking Abilities

All Parrots have the ability to talk, but the king of talking is the African Grey.  Greys can learn to say words, and sometimes phrases within days of first hearing them.  Some Greys can distinguish when words are used, and even what some of them mean.  They will say "Good Morning" if it is morning time, and "Bye" when they see that you are leaving.  Another example of this is a 28 year old Congo African Grey named Alex.  Alex can say around 800 words, and he is not even half way through his lifetime.  One thing that Alex does when he visits the doctor is hilarious.  When the doctor is done with Alex, and wants to go home, he will walk across the table, into his crate, turn around, and shut the door behind him!  After this he squaks "I wanna go back!"  This is why the African Grey's talking ability is one of the many great attributes to owning one.

In the Wild

In the wild this bird is found in rainforests, savannahs, clearings, and even in some villages in Central and Western Africa.  These birds have been known to sit atop of nearby trees and fly around the neighboorhood.  They usually like to stay in groups of 5 or 6.  In these groups they are always breeding, up until they day they die.  These birds are a beautiful sight in the wild, and are known as the most graceful parrot in Africa!

Behavior & Personality

The African Grey can be just as friendly as any other parrot, but also just as mean.  They have been known to become attatched to one person, and not care much for others, but that isn't always the case.  Like all parrots, the African Grey needs attention, and care.  By communicating with the bird, it becomes more friendly.  Greys can also be known to be a bit stubborn, but it adds to their character.  Basically, when worked with, an African Grey would make a great pet!
